Who is TESSO?
The Telecommunication Education & Skills Standards Organisation (TESSO) is a group of telecommunications industry representatives who are committed to enhancing the quality of professional standards and qualifications within our industry.
Our members have a comprehensive knowledge of the dynamic and technologically challenging nature of telecommunications because they are part of some of New Zealand’s major telecommunications businesses, including network operators, vendors, service providers and consultants.
These members include major corporate telecommunications companies (the backbone) and many small to medium enterprise telecommunications businesses (the mainstay). Also represented on the TESSO management board are associations of private training providers, tertiary polytechnics and telecommunications employees (the supporters). Our board and members work together as one team and leave their commercial interests at the door; focusing instead on serving the industry as a whole.
What do we do?
Our members are part of the telecommunications industry, which gives us a direct interest in ensuring that educational qualifications and standards for telecommunications workers will contribute to the future strength of New Zealand telecommunications. This interest means we work closely with ETITO, the Industry Training Organisation, as the recognised telecommunications industry advisory group.
ETITO is the key interface between the telecommunications industry and the education sector, ETITO has statutory obligations to: - develop national skill standards and qualifications; - develop arrangements for the delivery of industry training[1], including purchasing of training delivery from providers, monitoring of training arrangements and the assessment and quality assurance of training[2]; and - provide leadership to industry on matters relating to current and future skill needs[3] for the industries for which it has gazetted coverage.
We influence and advance the work that ETITO does by consulting and representing the industry on issues such as standards, training needs and qualification design. We advise ETITO on these needs and issues, and also identify skilled industry members who can assist ETITO in delivering the best possible educational training and assessment programmes.
Why do we do it?
We want the best for our industry, and people with the right skills can make a big difference— including making New Zealand telecommunications more competitive both at home and overseas. The challenges that drive us include making telecommunications qualifications more accessible, establishing competency-based qualifications, which are recognised both here and overseas, and keeping national standards relevant to the pace of technological change.
Why join us?
If you’re a Telco, telecommunications vendor, service provider, consultant or contractor, TESSO is the industry voice to help make industry standards and qualifications work for you and your employees.
Join us to help develop and shape standards and qualifications that can future-proof your business.
